About probiotics

Each probiotic has different characteristics depending on the unique qualities of its good bacteria and the medium in which they are grown.

Probiotic means “promoting life”. Probiotics are good bacteria that flourish in the gastrointestinal tract to support healthy digestive and immune function. However, how does one choose between all the choices of probiotics? For us, a probiotic product has to have a clear answer to the following questions:

• Where the probiotic is originally sourced from?
  • Most probiotics are originally sourced from the mouth or digestive tract of people. There are some studies that show evidence that probiotic bacteria that live naturally in the human mouth could in certain circumstances accelerate tooth decay, caused by the bacteria S. mutans.
  • PROVIOTIC^® is sourced from the Snowdrop flower. PROVIOTIC^® does not naturally live in the human mouth and cannot be associated with any risk of tooth decay.

• Are there major food allergens, such as lactose, gluten, soya or nuts that are part of the probiotic fermentation process?
  • Most probiotics on the market contain traces of one or more of the major food allergens: lactose, gluten, soya or nuts. Prior to using any probiotics, you should inquire whether the probiotic fermentation process yields a final product containing traces of lactose, gluten, soya or nuts. It is also important to note that probiotics that use milk as part of their growth solution cannot be vegan as they contain animal based proteins. These products are not vegan regardless of whether the probiotics are contained in vegetable or vegan capsules, as the major allergens and/or the animal traces are in the actual powder.
  • PROVIOTIC^® does not contain any major food allergens as its probiotic growth formula is pure vegetable juice. Thus, PROVIOTIC^® is 100% vegan and suitable for those pursuing a clean-eating lifestyle.
• • Has the probiotic been researched by professionals from a reputable academic institution?
    • Many of the probiotics today do not have rigorous scientific research behind their products and very few of them have a prominent US university as a research partner to verify the characteristics of their good bacteria. It is important to inquire about the scientific research that validates any probiotic product.

  • What is a CFU and how can one understand what these billions of CFUs actually mean?
    • CFU stands for Colony Forming Unit, or simply a bacterial cell. Thus, the number of CFUs tells how many bacterial cells are there in a probiotic serving. However, since the bacterial strains vary in terms of their size, their enzyme production, and their effectiveness, comparing only the number of CFUs across different strains is like comparing the strength of a group of mammals based purely on their numbers. Elephants and mice are both mammals; yet drawing conclusions about their comparative performance based on their count, not on individual qualities is flawed. This is also the case when it comes to comparing different bacterial strains.
    • The size of PROVIOTIC^® good bacteria is 14 m in length, which is one of the biggest among the other probiotic bacteria. This partly explains why PROVIOTIC^® is able to produce the specific enzymes that are so effective against bad bacteria in our in vitro tests.   • What are other evaluation criteria are important in the evaluation of a good probiotic?
    • Ability to survive the passage through the stomach by resisting the gastric acidity.
    • Ability to survive in the intestines by resisting the bile acids produced by the liver.
    • Antimicrobial activity against potentially pathogenic bacteria.
    • • • Ability to reduce pathogen adhesion to surfaces.
        • Ability to attach to the intestinal wall.

PROVIOTIC - born on a flower and grown in juice

Born on the petals of the European Snowdrop is a treasure – a powerful gift from nature. PROVIOTIC’s good bacteria GLB44 is extracted from this beautiful flower. Then, our probiotic is grown in fresh vegetable juice sourced from pristine, GMO free farms to become the unique vegan probiotic.

The snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis) is a beautiful flower that grows in many European countries, heralding spring on the snowy mountain tops. However, our good bacteria can only be found on the leaves of the South East European snowdrop, on the slopes of the Old Mountain in Bulgaria.

Thus, our good bacteria is named L. bulgaricus. There are over 300 different types of L. bulgaricus, but PROVIOTIC^® is the only one extracted directly from the leaves of this plant. All the other bulgaricus are originally sourced from traditional dairy yogurts. While genetically similar, PROVIOTIC^® is unique because its natural habitat is vegan; this is why our unique bulgaricus thrives better than all others in fresh juice.

The snowdrop is equipped to survive high in the mountain slopes where temperatures often drop to below freezing overnight. Indigenous to cold climates, this also explains why our good bacteria thrives in our cold pressed juice, even when kept in the refrigerator.

Competing for survival against other bacteria on the Old Mountain of Bulgaria, PROVIOTIC^® good bacteria is able to secure the scarce nutrients available in early spring. Laboratory tests showed the antimicrobial power of PROVIOTIC against seven of the worst bacterial pathogens including E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria, and S. Aureus while at the same time PROVIOTIC did not affect any of the good flora bacteria found in a healthy human being.

The unique power of PROVIOTIC^® stems from the specific qualities of its good bacteria: it produce peptides that inhibit bad bacteria, an ability encoded in PROVIOTIC^® ’s DNA. PROVIOTIC^® - its Bulgarian roots or what Lactobacillus bulgaricus is?

The first probiotic was discovered more than a century ago in South Eastern Europe as the result of a study into the unusual longevity of mountain villagers in Bulgaria.

While Greece is now famous for the probiotic properties of its Greek yogurt, interestingly, the first probiotic was not found in Greece, but in the small country just North of Greece – Bulgaria. In 1912, the New York Times published an article about the first probiotic, discovered as part of a study from the Pasteur Institute in Paris into the unusual longevity of Bulgarian mountain village communities. At the time, the oldest person on earth lived in one of these villages – baba Vasilka – thriving at 126 years of age with her son Todor, 101 years old at the time. In fact, in baba Vasilka’s community there were 6 times more centenarians per capita than in the United States today. Professor Stamen Grigorov of the Pasteur Institute discovered that part of this community’s daily intake was fermented milk containing probiotic bacteria, which he named after the country, calling it L. bulgaricus.

More than a century later, significant scientific research has been completed on these bacteria. Scientists have discovered more than 300 bulgaricus strains, and while each has similar DNA, there are substantial differences between them. Many of the bulgaricus were initially thought to possess plant origins, but the scientists could only find them as part of the yogurt starters of the local population. As attested in a direct record as part of the Budapest Treaty, PROVIOTIC^® is the only bulgaricus available today extracted not from a traditional yogurt, but from a beautiful flower – the snowdrop.

PROVIOTIC^® for digestive and immune health

PROVIOTIC^® is a vegan probiotic that flourishes in the gastrointestinal tract and works in harmony with the human body to support digestive and immune health.

DIGESTIVE AND IMMUNE HEALTH Intestinal flora consists of microorganisms that live in the digestive tract. Intestinal flora's primary benefit is energy extraction from the fermentation of undigested food. Intestinal bacteria also play a role in synthesizing complex sugars and vitamin synthesis.
